Description:

My costume was for Halloween festivities at my university. At Syracuse we have black squirrels that run around in addition to our regular grey squirrels. The black ones tend to be a bit bigger than the other squirrels. I think squirrels are hilarious and I especially like the black ones.

I purchased some faux black fur at JoAnn's craft store. I also bought some wire hangers at the dollar store. A cheap black "military" style belt with a black buckle from a surplus store.

I created the tail using hot glue, tape, a few trash bags and a bunch of plastic grocery bags.

I stuffed the plastic bags into the grocery bag and made it into a bolster shape. You want it to be really stiff so it can support the weight.
I undid the wire hangers and formed them into straight lines. I then taped the undone hangers length wise (top to bottom) to the plastic bag bolster. I cut or bent any wire that was too long. I then wrapped the wired bolster in the fur (measuring it out of course) and also cut a circle for the bottom. I folded any extra fur at the top the fur over to make a kinda of a curl. Then I shaped the tail to my liking. I attached the belt by cutting two slits near the bottom of the tail. (I figured out where to the belt by situating the tail where I wanted it to sit keeping in mind the higher up the belt the more support it would have.) I pinned the top of the tail to my black sweater.

Using a black ear warmer headband I made two ears using poster board, the faux fur and some hot glue. I also cut a patch of fur out for my chest and hot glued it to my sweater.

I happened to find a big golden acorn at the local Marshalls. I actually dropped and broke my acorn the first night. Thankfully they had one left when I went the next day.
